Peoples use of decentralised irks me
In general, peoples blatant misuse of words, irks me. Tjis counts doubly so, when people abuse it to the extent, that it becomes the new standard.
Decentralised
Withdrawn from a center or place of concentration; especially having power or function dispersed from a central to local authorities.
We need to have a chat about the abuse of this word, in relation to FOSS social media. Neither Mastodon, nor Nostr or any of the other services are decentralised, as they claim to be.
Everyone needs an account, that is hosted on a central server, that you pull content from. Sure everyone can potentially host their own server, but that server will most likely be hosted on a VPS, with a centralised hosting provider, at a facility with government oversight.
Stakeholder
One who has a share or an interest, as in an enterprise. One who holds the bets in a game or contest. The holder of a stake; one with whom the bets are deposited when a wager is laid.
This one really rubs me the wrong way, especially because it is used by corporate cunts to describe everyone else in a company.
If everyone is a stakeholder, nobody is a stakeholder. Plus, please explain to me, what stake they actually hold in this project/program?
I am pretty sure James from accounting doesn't hold a vested interest in what year of Excel is on his PC.
The only stakeholders in any company, are the shareholders, that have a voting interest in the company. If you can't vote, by definition you can't have an interest or a stake in the company, you are just an investor.
Finishing notes
I am sure I can come up with more words, but I am interested in hearing from other Geminauts, about the words which misuse, rubs you the wrong way.
I have a question as well, were people always this terrible with words or is this a recent development?
