Glossary for Geminispace
Geminispace has a lot of new words and shorthand, that can make some things hard to read and even hard to understand, so I made a glossary.
Gemini protocol
The protocol Geminispace is built on, envisioned by Solderpunk and later skyjake as well
Geminispace
Where we are currently, the part of the internet that was born on the Gemini protocol
Geminaut
A person who uses Geminispace
Gemlog
A Gemini log, often individual musings, derived from "web log" → "blog", "gopher log" → "phlog"
Gemtext
Gemini protocols page format and how you would write Gemlogs, it is only in UTF-8 with LF or CRLF line endings and filenames end in .gmi or .gemini
Capsule
A Gemini server or container, a place to host your own Gemtext and Gemlog
Capsuleer
A person that runs a capsule in Geminispace, sometimes has a mixed meaning along the lines of Geminaut
Misfin
Named after the Manned Space Flight Network(MSFN), is basically a messaging protocol like e-mail, but built after the Gemini protocol ideals
Misfin server (certificate is expired)
Titan protocol
A sister protocol to Gemini, that allows for editing of longer content in the browser, through the Gemini protocol
Cert/Certificate
Is part of an authentication method, the Gemini protocol uses it for encryption and identities
Feed
A list of date arranged links, for Geminispace that is often Gemtext files for a Gemlog
Gopher
Part of what inspired the Gemini protocol, invented in 1991 as a competing idea to http/www, with an even simpler concept than Gemini
Gopherhole
A Gopher server or container, a place to host your own Gemtext and Gemlog
Mole
An executable file on a Gopherhole, that can be used to create dynamic content
Phlog/Glog
Is a goPHer log, often with personal musings and was kind of predecessor to Gemlogs
Nex protocol
Another simplified protocol, inspired by Gopher and Gemini
OFFLFIRSOCH
OFFLine-FIRst SOftware CHallenge, issued in March every year by solderpunk
ROOPHLOCH
Remote Outdoor Off-grid PHLOgging CHallenge, issued in September every year by solderpunk
Smolspace/smolnet
A pet name for the small in file size internet protocols, like Gemini and Gopher
Smallspace/smallnet/small web
Kind of the same as smolspace, but there is some debate on what protocols belong to the name
Spartan protocol
A simple two way protocol, that supports Gemtext and has no encryption
TLS
Transport Layer Security, the security protocol Gemini requires for encryption, it uses certificates and requires version 1.2, but recommends 1.3
TOFU
Trust-On-First-Use, refers to how encryption certificates are handled in the Gemini protocol
Zine/smolzine
Zine is a small shortening of magazine and is basically tiny online magazines
